The Athos peninsula, the easternmost of the three that comprise the area called Chalkidiki, is exclusively taken up by the community of Mount Athos, a monastic complex unique in the world. Expanding across approximately 350 m2, it encompasses twenty Holy Monasteries, as well as other buildings relating to monastic life; they all comprise a self-governed part of the Greek state.
